When you are pregnant, finding clothing to wear during those nine months can be a struggle. However, what no one really mentions is that even after you have the baby you are still going to look pregnant for many weeks after.
After carrying a human inside you for 9 (really 10) long months, there is nothing that you want more than to put on some real clothing that feels and looks good. Many women simply cannot wait to get back into their old wardrobe. Unfortunately, this is going to take some time. After you have your baby your uterus may be empty, but you are still going to have a bit of a bulge around your midsection.
Fortunately, after you have a baby people truly understand that you are tired and have little time to yourself, which means that you can get away with old sweatpants and t-shirts for a bit. However, when you are ready to go out, you want to look a bit less disheveled. To help get you through those first few months after having a baby, consider these 5 tips for dressing your body after baby.
How to Dress Your Postpartum Body
1. Bring Back the Maternity Clothes

When it comes down to it, chances are you are sick of every piece of maternity clothing that you own. You want to box those clothes up not look at them again for a bit. However, your body is not going to be ready for real clothing just yet. When you get home from the hospital you are still going to have that little baby pooch and you are going to be sore. Keep out the most comfortable maternity clothes that you own and use them for at least the first few weeks in order to stay comfortable.
2. Think about the Stretch

Postpartum leggings are going to be one of your favorite pieces of clothing. A good quality pair of post-pregnancy leggings (or several pairs) will provide you with the comfort that you are looking for after you have a baby. The great thing about leggings is that they can be paired with a cute top or even a dress and you will look quite stylish.
If you find a brand of leggings that you like, buy a few pairs along with some cute tops to go with them and you will be able to throw together an outfit that you look and feel good in, which is important as a new mother.
3. Loose-Fitting Tops

Just like leggings are going to be your best friend for your bottom half, loose-fitting tops are going to be your best friend for your top half. Even if you are not nursing, you are going to want to wear tops that are loose and flowy and just feel comfortable and good.
If you are nursing, a loose-fitting top allows for easy access to the boob. If you are truly missing some of your favorite pre-pregnancy tops, consider shopping for similar tops and just purchasing a size or two bigger. This will allow you more room and you are going to be more comfortable overall.
You can also wear some cute off-the-shoulder tops as well. These are great for nursing as they allow easy access. You can find some that look nice and will allow you to feel comfortable!
Of course, there are also some great nursing tops available as well. You can also find some comfy nursing tanks and combine them with a cute cardigan or sweater for a fun and casual look that is also functional and comfortable.
4. It is Okay to Splurge a Little on Something Fun

Those last few weeks of pregnancy are rough. Well, being pregnant in general is tough, after all, you are growing another human inside your body. After you have a baby, you are in the area where you do not want to wear your maternity clothes any longer and your pre-pregnancy clothes are not going to work at all. This can be a bit depressing to some women. During this time it is a good idea to treat yourself to some fun new clothing items.
Some fun items to consider splurging a bit on include a pretty nursing dress, a flowy cardigan that can be used to mix and match with a basic nursing tank, or even a simple elegant necklace that will make you feel pretty.
5. Stay True to Yourself

When it comes to the clothes that you wear it really is all about what you like. When you first have a baby, you are going to be exhausted nearly all of the time. This is why it is important to have several comfortable items of clothing that you can wear all of the time. Yoga pants, leggings, even sweatpants are all perfectly acceptable attire for a new mother.
Whatever you do and however you dress, make sure that you do not get down on yourself. You need to truly think about and accept your body for what it looks like at this point.
When it comes down to it, remember that it took you ten months to get your body where it currently is. Growing a human is no joke. It takes a lot of work and your body is going to show some signs of everything that went into making that perfect little human that you now love unconditionally. Take care of yourself and remember your body is going to look different than when you started. Doctors state that it can take up to ten weeks just for your uterus to be the size it was before you got pregnant.
During this special time, it is important to feel good about yourself. Choose clothing that is comfortable and that you feel good in, even if it happens to be the same pair of post-pregnancy leggings that you are wearing for the third day in a row. 💋
